Ball progression at Manchester United, so far..

The scatter plot above shows how many times United players progress the ball either by carrying or passing it towards the opposition’s goal per 90 minutes.

So what conclusions can we make from this graph?

  • Sancho has been our best progressive carrier and hasn’t been bad as its made out to be on social media.
  • The left wing Pogba was too good probably our best attacking threat when he played down the left.
  • Our best ball playing defenders are Shaw, Maguire, Varane and Dalot, I really want to see this back 4 in the coming games. Also as in Rangnick’s system fullbacks provide the width, I don’t think playing AWB or Telles makes sense.
  • In the second quadrant only Shaw and Bruno have played a considerable amount of 90s and both of them have been consistent in their output. Although in this new system under Ralf Rangnick Bruno is struggling as he has to play much wider than he is used to. Ralf should try him in the front 2 because he can drop deep, receive and efficiently progress the ball into the final third which will lead to more good chances and also add another dimension in our attack.
  • Our strikers are not very productive when they don’t score, although Cavani offers much more than Ronaldo out of possession.
  • Matic’s numbers are good because he has played only 7.4 90s same goes for Pogba(7 90s) and Dalot(5.2 90s)
  • Among players who have who have played more than ten 90s Fred and McTominay rank 3rd and 4th in Progressive passes respectively, only behind Bruno and Shaw.
  • Our average for progressive carries and progressive passes as a team is quite low, hopefully it improves…

I hope you enjoyed it. This is the first time I’m publishing something , so I know I have to improve a lot, feedbacks are much appreciated. If anyone ever reads :p
